We talked about Excel this class and I've used this program before. This summer, while working at the library, I used Excel to organize reader minutes. It is a great tool if you know what to do and how to use it properly.
I used Inspiration to do my concept map this week and I actually found that I loved the program. It was easy to use and organize and I could change images and colours. If I had this tool while I was in school, I probably would have loved brainstorming and mapping concepts.

I don't ever remember getting an in-depth and specific lecture about internet safety, online respect, and intellectual copyright. The most I ever got as a student was the lecture about not giving out names and addresses. But, I think that it is important to be teaching students about how to behave and act on the internet, especially in this modern world where we use computers and internet for just about everything. Just because a school puts up a filter or a block doesn't mean that the student won't accidentally stumble across anything.
This week, my group also presented our Smartboard presentations. For the most part, it went well, but I personally dislike the way the Smartboard program works. It's very cool to have an interactive dimension to learning and I will definitely continue to use it because I want to take advantage of that interactive learning. However, the program is very slow on my computer (it makes everything lag and, on occasion, freeze), you can only resize objects in one corner, it doesn't give you the full screen and I have to scroll around. So, I am not a huge fan of it. When giving presentations, I will probably stick to Powerpoint for giving information and only use the Smartboard when I have an activity I want the students to interact with. Brainstorm maps. Oh, how I hated them in elementary school. When I did them, it was for the sake of the teacher rather than for my own benefit. I prefer to organize my thoughts into lists and charts, but that's just me. However, after learning about Inspiration and digitally mapping out concepts, I think that this would be a very useful tool. If I change my mind or make a mistake, I can very easily delete it, whereas with pencil and paper, it becomes such a pain to erase things and rearrange everything. I've become familiar with the concept of digital footprints in the last couple of weeks. I attended a couple of workshops that stressed the importance of maintaining an online, professional presence, but also the necessity to network with people through social media. This is a huge advantage for teachers to trade tips and information so that they can learn from each other, but it's also beneficial to finding a job. By making yourself known to employers, you increase your chances of being hired. However, my problem is how common my name is. There are pages and pages of people who are not me, and my biggest concern is that if a potential employer googles me, they may mistake someone else for me. We were shown these videos in class today, and they truly changed my perspective about people with learning disabilities. They are amazing and real eye-openers for people who've never quite understood before. |
